Is archery for you?
Target archery is a sport that can be undertaken, and enjoyed, by almost everybody, from the young to the very old. It requires only a modest level of fitness to participate. Although it is an Olympic sport and is very competitive at the higher levels, it is also a very social activity at club level.
Want to take up archery?
To become a member of an archery club, and to take up the sport properly, you need to complete an approved Archery GB beginners' course. This will ensure that you are capable of shooting safely and help you to understand and apply basic archery techniques.
About the beginners' course
- Our beginners' courses are led by Archery GB licenced coaches, supported by experienced members of the club. We try to achieve a ratio of one instructor to three beginners, or better. The course is usually limited to a maximum of nine attendees to make sure everybody can participate fully.
- No previous archery experience is required but archers must be 8 years old or over, and we recommend getting in touch with the course coordinator before booking a beginner under the age of 10 on a course.
- The course consists of three formal sessions of approximately two and a half hours each, normally spread over three successive weekends, plus an optional fourth supported session shooting with the club.
- Courses usually take place at our range near Shootash.
What happens afterwards?
If you enjoyed the course and want to continue with archery then the next thing to do is to become a member of a club. Naturally we hope that you would join our club but there are other clubs in the area who you may prefer.
We normally accept attendees who complete the course successfully but this does depend on whether or not we have vacancies. Head over to the Membership page to find out more information about joining The Romsey Archers.
Not sure about archery?
If you are unsure whether archery is for you, and don’t feel ready for a full beginner’s course, we occasionally run taster sessions, which are single two hour sessions where, with a minimum of theory, you can try your hand at shooting some arrows at a target. See the Courses page for any scheduled taster sessions.
Costs
The cost of a beginner’s course is currently £50.00 plus a small booking fee. The cost of a taster session is £10.00 plus a booking fee. We provide all the necessary equipment.
If you would like further information on scheduled courses please look on the Courses page.
